Raised panel open reed
« on: February 13, 2010, 12:56:50 AM »

I've been kicking around the idea in my head for a while to attempt a raised panel checkered call.  I've seen quite a few duck calls with raised panels, but haven't seen a predator call with one.  The raised panel calls sure do have sort of a mystique to them.  I have a ton of respect for the guys that do a raised panel duck call.  There are a lot of hours that go into making one of these calls.  I have 18 hours put into the call below.  I also need to say thanks to Wes for some help along the way, and JJgoose as well.  The other calls that I have checkered up to this point have been at 18 lines per inch.  The one below is at 20 lpi.

All comments and critiques welcomed.

You won't get money rich in this hobby.  The richness is in the culture, the craft, the friends you meet along the way, and being able to call in a wary game animal with a call that you made with your own hands.

Wow Brian. That is one of the finest calls I have seen. It is just magnificent. And just a few weeks ago you had never even checkered before. I can confidently say you are probably one of the two or three top calls makers in the country. The others I consider at the top have many, many years of experience, while you have only be turning a few years. With a few more years experience you will definately be the best!

It has been too cold to be in the shop this past week.  So I dug out my set of nail stippling tools and the checkering tools, I thought I was doing good, for a week I had thrown only one piece of wood away.   These are the only tools I can use in the house without making a mess, I even have a vacuum setup to make sure there is no mess.  Then you do this to us, I think my stippling tools and checkering tools need a rest, a long rest.
