Okay......
« on: June 11, 2008, 08:21:39 PM »
Getting to be that time of year again soon.  Someone PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me what the tubing is called, where you get it, what size it is, how you cut it straight for cow elk calls.

I've used the tubing from Lowes they use for slingshots, and its the right diameter, just not enough stretch.

(If this is one of those trade secrets, you can pm me with the answer.   ;D  :D )

THANKS!

Parker

Hi Parker!

You mean that stuff to cover the reed so you don't pinch your tongue?

I have the very same question, so this may be a solution.....
Medical supply companies sell surgical tubing.  It may just be the answer.

Al just shipped some elk call guts to me today, I'm fired up to make some. ;D

;)  I think Al knows the answer.....and I think it comes from McMaster Carr??????  I'm trying to remember, but it doesn't quite click.

I REALLY need to know now!  Just had a guy order 10 cow elk calls for his camp this fall!   :o

I'm sitting here looking at my factory made cow call.  The stuff on it reminds me of electrical heat shrink tubing. ??? :-* :o??????????  ???

Go to McMaster and take a look at "About Shrink Tubing".  There is some intersting stuff in there.....
Let me know if you find what we are looking for.

I believe the heat shrink is to thin. There is a "cold shrink" tubing also. It has a wire weave under it you pull out that lets it colapse. It's thicker than the other. I guess you'd have to make sure you bought it watching the smallest dimension wire. I would think the surgical tubing would work better.

Size?  We have to pick a size?  This call making sure does get complicated!  LOL!

I haven't been to the mailbox yet to see if my guts came.  I would think with an interior diameter just slightly smaller than the guts.  I do know it will help if you get the tubing wet before sliding it on.  The thinist wall tubing possible would probably perferable.....  8)

I'm really ready to turn some cow calls, I better make a run to the mailbox! ;D :-* :)

Back from the mailbox with my package of goodies!

THANKS AL!!!!!!! ;D
They are great cow elk guts, they work perfectly right out of the box!  Heck, they don't even need the tubing except I figure that will keep a lot of dirt out of the guts.

Parker,
The guts measure .380 or just .10 larger that 3/8th's.
They make a tubing that is 5/16 interior, 7/16 exterior with 1/16 inch walls.  Sound like it would make a good snug fit........ ;D ::) :P :-* :)

I love it when a plan comes together!
All The Best!
Doug.

Hi Parker!
I took my latest cow elk call over to show a buddy that is really into calling elk.  The first comment he made was "I'm really glad you didn't put that rubber tubing on it".

It seems that after a bit of time a lot of gunk builds up in the call between the guts and the tubing.  Things like peanut butter sandwiches and such.....(LOL!) ;D

My buddy told me he really likes my second call and to go turn a lanyard ring in it and bring it back for him to buy.  With archery elk season set to open in a little over six weeks, I have to get my rear into production mode. :o

Just sharing a little feedback.
All The Best!
Doug.

;)  Good to know!  I'm sure there's PBandJ running around in a lot of our calls if we took some swabbings.   ;D  HAHAHA!  GOOD STUFF!

I would sure like to see a picture of the call with the tubing you guys are talking about. I don't have a clue what you're talking about. I'm not an Elk hunter and that may be part of the reason.
