Woodpecker
« on: August 06, 2009, 06:10:47 PM »
I had a few emails asking me how I made a woodpecker call.  First the woodpecker sounds is also the manipulation of the sound of the call by the caller, not anything special if you can do that, if you cannot it will drive you crazy.  Some can do it with the standard JC reeds, I am handicapped because I have been spoiled by the older calls that are tunable to different pitches.

This call is 40 years in the making, copied after PS Olt T20 using a modified Louisiana style toneboard.  With a little research you can find these pre made or you can make them yourself.  The one I used here is a molded version that I cut the length to what I like.  In the photo on the top left is a Delrin sleeve, to it's left is the bottom of the toneboard, on the bottom left is the wedge and the right is the reed.

Here is the reed assembled.  This reed still needs to be tuned, this one here will make a great jackrabbit.

This is all of the parts before assembly.

The finished call.

Thanks for the comments.

To keep from getting any more emails the LA style molded guts are available from Webfoot.  They are about 3.50 each.
