Closed Reed Shotgun Shells
« on: August 04, 2009, 08:31:01 PM »
A friend of our son called and wanted some calls like I made him and our son about 12 years ago.  We introduced this young man to coyote hunting when he was in high school.  On one of the hunts he and our son were sitting on the stand with shotguns, when this coyote came out of nowhere and he killed his first coyote.  I made him and our son a call using the brass from the spent shotgun hulls.  Yesterday he came by with a sack full of hulls and asked for 4 calls for his friends.

Here is the first one that I made, now I am waiting on his approval to start on the others.  It uses my old style J frame toneboard with a double reed, starts out with a crying jack but with more air pressure can scream like a cottontail.

Looks like you made a lasting impression on your son's friend Marvin.  A rather unique call to say the least.  One that will be cherished and undoubtedly passed on to another generation when the time comes.  Nice work!

Those are really nice calls and a unique design.  That J frame closed reed set up makes for one of the best sounds.
More makers should try making closed reed predator calls this way.

Very cool Marvin. That's definately a sweet design for a call.

Thanks for the comments.

Dave, lasting impression is only part of it.   He was often refereed to as our step-son that we could not deduct for tax purposes.

Mark, someone else also uses a shotgun shell in their call, cannot think of the name right now.  Maybe someone will answer that.

9th, where have you been?  When will I see one of these using a LA style board?  We both know that the LA board is a better choice for these toys.

Brian, thanks.

That's some great work Marvin.  I'm impressed by your design ideas, as usual!

Marvin, I also make some shotshell calls. I make them from the original shells and also, like you, just using the brass. However, mine don't look anywhere near as good as yours do.

Yeah I knew someone else made them.  I remember now, do you use a double JC reed set up.

I don't know Braz, yours are pretty fine too, especially those all brass ones.   But Marvins are very nice also - really creative both of you!

Nice work Dogcatcher -  I like those, and I agree with Ninth, those inserts are good.   The couple you sent me are good liitle calls.

Marvin, I only use a single insert. The call is a bit small for a double. Would just wipe out the entire top. I did make a crow call from 10 gauge and it came out sweet.

I like that crow call, now I have to go begging for 10 gauge hulls.  I now have a better plan for my closed reed!  But first I have to take the customers money on these 12's, then knock them dead with the 10 gauge.  Maybe a double barrel version.

Now who is the maker that makes shotgun shells with 2 reeds?  Anybody know?

Besides Marvin and Braz, the only other person I know that makes shotgun shell calls is Kelly Beltz, but his are pintail whistles.

I don't think that I've ever seen a side by side JC reed call using the brass from a shotgun.
