Rich..... Color Wood?
« on: May 02, 2008, 08:37:55 PM »
Rich here is the piece of wood you sent me. It was written on and said "Color Wood" Is that the actual name of the wood? Anyway i decided to turn it today and this is the howler I made from it. It's about 6 inches long maybe a little more.

Thanks
John

Looks good John  ;D It feels to light to be Dymond wood. My brother gave me some of each to play with. It`s different stuff to work with. Your really having fun with that box.

Oh yeah I have been enjoying myself a bunch making these calls. I wish i had gotten started 35 years ago though. Maybe somebody can put a name to the wood. I was curious because it was just written on it "color wood". I thought that might be it's name but had no idea. I can't tell one wood from another by looking at them.

John,

Nice looking call. Looks like you are getting doing well.

Color wood is made by the same company as dymondwood (Rutland plywood). The differences I have noticed between the two are dymondwood seems to have more vivid colors, is denser and does not require any other finish but a good polish (like acrylic) Dymondwood also cracks easily if you get it too hot when drilling or sanding. The piece you have appears to be the came color that richards microfit (custom gun stock supplier)calls brown laminate, I am not sure what the official name issued by Rutland is though. If you wish more inf regarding this wood, try rutply.com. That is the website for for the company. Hope this helps.

Thanks RW I'll go to that link and read up on it. I'm not only learning about call making but so many other things are coming into play as well. I noticed immediately that this wood seemed different when I started turning it so I got curious as to what it was. It sure sanded and got smooth quick on the lathe compaired to some of the other woods I have had the pleasure to try. this is just too much fun. I find myself out in the shop at 2 or 3 in the morning turning a call. then when I come back to bed i get that look. "you know the look"  :'(

Sure doesn't take you long to get ahold of the how to's on these calls John!!  ;D  I like the way your starting. Simple yet very user friendly with a little flair to them. Then to top em off you are paying attention to the details. Your sanding appears to be top notch which is very critical for a nice finish.  ;D

Good lookin' call there!

Another thing to note about colorwood and dymondwood is that they're made of layers of birch.  Each type goes through a different process.  Colorwood is lighter, and holds the sound tone qualities of birch well.  Dymondwood, as stated before in talking about polishing, is impregnated with so much junk that its almost a plastic rather than a wood.

I prefer to turn dymondwood, but I'd rather drill colorwood.   ;D

Its laminated birch.

Goose, I'd trade you some different colored stuff for one of your goose calls.   ;D

Howdy Parker!

I'll have my new website up in a week or so. ;D  When I do, you can go through the pictures and find something you might want to trade for.

What colors do you have?  I've never played with laminated birch, what does it work and sound like?

Doug.

 ;D  AWESOME!

I don't know exactly what all colors I have.  Density wise.....I'm thinking its similar to cherry.

I'll have to dig through my stash and send several color variations to you.

I know I have blue and grey, and green and grey.  There's more colors, but I don't know what they are off-hand.  Just send me a PM when you get things up and running.  I'm in no hurry.

Here's a colorwood gooser with a ECHO insert.

Parker

And here's some blue and grey goosers.  What size of blank will you need to get something made?
