2 Piece Striker Tutorial
« on: April 17, 2015, 03:00:09 PM »
This is my method of making 2 piece strikers.
First pic, mark center of blank for drilling

Drill about 1" deep with 5/16" bit.

My mandrel, a 3/8" steel rod with one end turned to 5/16" and a drop off for sanding purposes.  This can also be made out of aluminum or wood.  Or a simple one can be made using a 5/16" bolt with the head cut off.

Blank mounted on mandrel.

Turn to shape.  The live center end tip is parted off and the end sanded and then finished.

Finished striker with an acrylic rod.

Thanks for the info.  I have been playing with making two piece strikers with scraps and left over acrylic from duck call inserts that I screw up.

Where do you find the 5/16 inch acrylic rod?  Delvies doesn't have rod that small.

Thanks

I made this several years ago, the dowels including the acrylic came from Brookside or Grassy Creek.  Not sure on which one I bought these from, and no clue if they still sell them.

Shouldn't this be in the Tutorial section? I really like how you do these.....

A bump for the upcoming season!  It is THAT time of year to buy some turkey call making parts and 'break some stuff' to learn how it all works!  Happy turning!
