rabbit distress?
« on: November 26, 2014, 01:16:18 AM »
Hi all, one of my buddies gave me a new lathe motor and wired it in for me when mine went kaput. He is an avid predator Hunter and collects distress calls, I thought I'd try to make him a rabbit distress call, but have no idea how togo about doing that. Could somebody point me in the right direction?

Wait! I'm wrong! It is the "Raspy Cottontail Reed" and the Jack rabbit and fawn bleat Reed" Guess I got confused about what they were called.... Then he has the open reed toneboards, those are AWESOME! they sound so good!

Get a chunk of wood, drill a 1/2" hole in it and turn it to something that looks like a call. Then glue one of these in the end.

Presto, you have a good predator call.

What he uses and like the most is called a Weems
 ( http://thumbs3.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/mFBH8zuV1eBtG31ULgdaIBw.jpg ),

I was planning to make it as close as possible to this call, unless you guys think he'd like an open reed better (he doesn't use them).

Everybody has their own likes and dislikes, but you can do so much more with an open reed. A closed reed is basically set at one pitch. An open reed lets you go from bird to gravely jack rabbit, all with one call.

The other advantage is that open reeds won't freeze up in cold weather.

Go to Al's store and order a JC reed and sleeve.  For a Weems look a like, use a 1" square blank 3.25" long.  This has to be done on the lathe with a 4 jaw chuck holding the blank.  Start drilling from the exhaust end, first drill the exhaust 2" deep using a 5/8" bit.  Then without removing the blank from the 4 jaw chuck drill a  9/32" hole the rest of the way through.  While in the 4 jaw chuck sand the inside of the exhaust.  Remove and mount on you 5/8" mandrel.  Now drill the mouth end 1/4" deep using 5/16" bit.  Turn to shape, sand and finish...

The inside should be like this      l----------------------l------------l----l
                                                  2" exhaust bore      1" sleeve  1/4"
