Snakewood
« on: August 04, 2013, 06:35:01 PM »
My first try at snakewood.  I've had this stuff in the shop drying for at least two years now, and finally decided to turn a piece of it as an experiment since I get a lot of guys asking for it.  I've heard the horror stories about it cracking after being turned into a call, so I've been reluctant to use it.  This one will get abused on my lanyard this season to see how it takes it.  It has Velvit oil on it.  The logo is engraved a little larger than I'd like, but the new guy at the laser engraver's shop is just starting to get a feel for exactly what I want size-wise.

Awesome call!  I like the size of the engraving. I wish my local engravers had a laser machine that engraves on the radius.  I am limited. Again very nice call!

Gosh Aaron be careful working with this extremely toxic wood.  Worth researching.  It is Snakewood that finally broke my immune system down.  Now even any dust, not even wood dust will start to bother me, and if I still play with it send me back to the doctor for predizone.  Not a good thing.  Nevertheless, nice looking call.

Thanks for the nice comments everybody!

Joe I had heard that some folks have issues with this stuff so I was extra cautious when turning and especially when sanding it.  Turned the air cleaner on high, wore my fine dust mask, vacuumed all the shavings afterwards and washed up really thoroughly.  No side effects, but I know that this sort of thing can come at you anytime.  Guys turn cocobolo for years and all of a sudden will have nasty reactions to it.  I just hope that I can get away with turning the exotic woods for years to come, so I'm pretty careful.  I'm seriously considering one of those Trend AirShield setups, but might have to dig a hole to stand in so it wouldn't drag on the ceiling.   :smartass:
