go by a cabinet shop, or call, they usually have tons of scrap, and i've never had them not let me take some.  May not be the greatest carving wood, but you never know what you'll find, and it should be nice to practice on.

that's a great idea. I actually got ahold of a nice 3x3x12 piece of poplar today from the woodshop teacher at my school. I've already cut a few pieces down to size and I sketched the design on the small piece of wood. I'm just gonna make a few more cuts down to size, then time to start carving it by hand.

Send me an email at kfandb@yahoo.com with your address and I'lll send you a chunk of basswood that I've had out in my shop forever. It's kiln dried to about 8% mositure and is probably about 2" thick. If you can use it, let me know. I agree with Al that basswood is a great place to start with your carving. Enjoy!!

I just thought of this but if you are still looking for some palates you should just look around the dumpster at most retail stores.  They are usually stacked up next to them.  Try the smaller stores like Bed Bath and Beyond which are normally in a strip mall.  Usually those strip malls have a road that goes around the back of the stores where the dumpsters are.
