2 Piece Calls
« on: October 11, 2008, 09:12:29 PM »
This was another one of my other projects this week.  I had talked to a buddy of mine that is now in a Veterans Administration nursing home and he wanted a couple of my calls that I used to make.  I know they will be confiscated by the nursing staff, but I figured what the heck.  He deserves a few hours of driving the place crazy.

These are made out of maple with walnut stoppers.  The maple is drilled 3 times to leave an air chamber before the reed.  Kind of like the old Glodo duck call barrels.  When I dreamed this theory up back in the 70s I had never heard of Glodo.  All I know is that they make the reeds sound raspier and the call is louder.  My friend called them Marvin's Madness, and that was pretty well what we called them.  I didn't make many of these, a lot more work to make.  On these I did use O-rings on the stopper, other wise they are as I made them years ago.  These were sanded to 600 grit and are finished with a home brewed oil/poly finish.

Marvin,

What are they voiced with??  A JC reed?

You won't get money rich in this hobby.  The richness is in the culture, the craft, the friends you meet along the way, and being able to call in a wary game animal with a call that you made with your own hands.

Good lookin' callers there Marvin.  Great story to go with them too!   ;D  I like that!

Can you explain the stopper a little more?  I'm confused on what its use is.

Does it make the chamber needed to be filled with air to work the reed smaller?  I guess in my mind, you're blowing on it from the walnut end, but I'm not sure if that's the case.

Parker,

The walnut piece is the mouth piece/stopper.  A lot of the predator calls that are made 2 piece today are made that way for looks, not function.   There are some that have a function but the majority of the calls could be made out of a single blank.  On this one the walnut stopper seals the chamber before the reed.

;)  Thanks for the explanation Marvin.  I understand now, and that's what I was thinking.

I always think of a 'stopper' as an end like on a duck call, instead of a top like on a wine bottle.  That's what was setting me behind the curve.

Good stuff.  I like it.   ;)
