hole size for jc reeds
« on: December 04, 2011, 05:25:47 PM »
I just found this site and registered today.  I have made a call on my lathe, but wasnt impressed withe kit from CSUSA (2 piece). I want to make a one piece call with JC reed and sleeve.  What size hole do you guys use in the reed end and in the tone chamber end.

Secondly what is a good alternative to the pen mandrel, cause the pen mandrel doesnt work well with a one piece design.  It could just be my lack of experience as well.

Thanks in advance!!!!

What I do is to drill a 5/8" hole for he bell end and a 9/32| hole for the sleeve. I then mount it on a 5/8" expandin mandel for turning. works out great.

Hey thanks.  Is the expanding madrel a certain type or is it just an expanding mandrel that accomidates that size.

I use a pen mandrel with 2 cone blocks, 1 on each end. I drill 1/2" on the bell end and 9/32" for the reed and I countersink on the mouth piece end. I don't have the expanding chuck yet.
