Handcrafting Custom Duck Calls / Woodshop teacher seeking advice
« Last post by Andrew Wessling on November 07, 2019, 11:08:53 AM »
I'm a woodshop teacher in Nebraska and I have a number of students who are interested in making their own duck calls. The turning of the barrel seems to go off pretty well. However, as soon as we get to turning the insert, we have problems.

I have looked into purchasing an insert jig to keep things consistent with my students, and I have made a few jigs myself out of wood, but high school students are pretty fantastic at trimming those down with band saw. Does anyone have any suggestions on making custom jigs, ordering metal jigs, or happen to have an old insert jig sitting around collecting dust that they would be willing to part with?

I love to see how passionate these students are when it comes to making these, but I also am starting to walk that fine line where their frustrations lead to giving up on this project.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Andrew

Handcrafting Custom Duck Calls / Re: Pinning vs. epoxy for barrell bands?
« Last post by LagrueCustomCalls on November 05, 2019, 12:01:40 PM »
Don, my answer depends somewhat on the band and the material the band is and what it is going on.

I always glue on wooden bands no matter what.

For anodized aluminum bands on acrylic calls, I use an industrial epoxy adhesive (think JB Weld).

For wooden calls with an either brass or copper band, I pin the band. The band is also a pretty tight fit. Matching metal pins.

For stabilized wood calls with either a brass or copper band I typically pin and epoxy the band. Again, the band is a pretty tight fit.

When pinning, I pin in 3 places as opposed to the 2 pins that most use. It is one more pin, but structurally, you don't get the rocking band even if/when the barrel shrinks.

I glue all my bands no pins required.  The key is using a good epoxy. I use this one.

Is epoxying acceptable ofer pinning  a band on a barrell? Or should a guy do both? From my understanding to dont want the barrell to tight on there so there is a little give for the wood to expand when you push your insert in?

Finished one for one of my shipping company suppliers.  Name of the company is "Ship Ogre"  Blew up the logo off their website, etched it on to glass.  Hope the picture does it justice. It looked really good

Handcrafting Custom Duck Calls / Re: Call parameter change questions

My first question is this a new made stopper as I assume this is the same you were working on. Have you lengthened the tone channel only or what other modifications have you made . Curious are you using a public jig or one you have made or had made.

If you have lengthened the tone channel did it help or other things you have done. In order to give you the best guess more information would be helpful.

Handcrafting Custom Duck Calls / Call parameter change questions
« Last post by T. Stauffer on October 28, 2019, 10:17:27 AM »
What parameters should I mess with on my calls if I like the quacks and hail call sounds my call is producing but feel that the chuckles and feeding calls are too deep and broken? I don't want to shorten the reed or add heavier dog ears because I feel it takes my quacks and hail calls to a higher note. I also have a call that I like the sound on but its difficult to chuckle on. What would make it easier to call/blow? Is that a backpressure issue?

Thanks in advance!

To make an all wood grunter, just change the stopper end.      You still have to have it join to the barrel, but you turn the stopper end to replace the tube.  There are a ton of examples here and on Facebook for ideas.  It's really not that involved or difficult.  If you are looking for EXACT dimensions of the exhaust tube, I don't believe I have ever seen that information posted here.  Might have been, but I just do not recall it.  It's something that you have to tinker with on your own to get your own sound out of the call.

Start with a new one so you know where you are at. Tinkering with the old one is good but you need to start fresh.

Thanks for the advice fellas. I do believed I filed too much off on the end of the tone board. I am thinking about filing back near the cork to raise the reed and see what happens. I may start with lengthening the tone channel first though.
