Handcrafting Custom Turkey Calls / Pot calls with no center hole
« Last post by Greybeard on January 02, 2020, 03:30:04 PM »
Trying to figure out how to work a blank into a pot without it having a center hole.  I remember reading a post a while back about someone making pots on a lathe without using a center hole.  Are glue blocks the way to start it?  Or are Cole jaws the better option?  Are there other ways?  What do the experts think?

Don''

I have been checking the posts regularly and have not seen if any of the suggestions to your questions have been a help to you. It would be good if they have helped and what helped so others can get the benefit of your experience to help others.

thanks and have a Merry Christmas.

General Call Making Discussions / Re: Mandrel size

Most of us use the Penn State Industries (PSI) collet chuck and a straight mandrel. You adapt the collet chuck to the spindle nose of your lathe and then the collets allow different size straight mandrels to be used.

PSI should have an adapter for your lathe.

Now you just need to figure out the lathe spindle  thread. The PSI collet chuck has a 1x8 internal thread and comes with one adapter for a 3/4x16 spindle.
Buy a 3/4x16 nut and try it on your spindle, it should work according to my reference material. If so all you need is to order the PSI chuck with the adapter. Amazon sometimes has a better price on the chuck.

Here is a link to the operators manual for your lathe.

I have a Sears craftsman 12 inch wood lathe (113.228160) and I’m trying to see if anyone in here is running the same machine and to see what mandrels or other tools y’all are using for duck calls and other game calls. I’ve bought two others that said measurements would fit mine but I have yet found one.

General Call Making Discussions / Re: Unacceptable Runout

I think you answered your own question when you commented “ There is just the smallest of runout on the adaptor”. I am not sure how you noticed it but if it was by any means other than a dial indicator, Thee’s your problem. Get Abdul indicator fro Harbor Frieght and check each pice at a time for run out. Remover as the horizontal plane legthens, the runout multiplies. I highly suspect you have the wrong adaptor. Look up the lathe on Harbor Frieght and see what the thread count is for that model and get the correct one that will adapt to your collet chuck.
