Handcrafting Custom Turkey Calls / Re: Striker Question

you can try sanding the slate surface.  Just use some 320 grit and sand it ligktly in the direction of the grain of the wood.

I personally dont have much luck with rosewood strikers.  when I make a call out of cocobolo or bocote, I usually make a two piece striker and use a purpleheart or hickory dowel and just top it with whatever the pot  is made out of.

Handcrafting Custom Turkey Calls / Striker Question
« Last post by Banded Drake Woodworks on February 25, 2020, 08:00:31 PM »
I made a one piece striker for a friend last night at his request out of cocobolo. It's about 7.5 inches in length and the dowel part is right at 5/16".  Its my first flared tip striker to make, and my problem is, I cant get it to purr nor can i get the sound to be consistent across the slate.  Only thing I can think of off hand is the tip is sanded with 320 grit.  Any ideas?

I tried to post a pic of it on here from my phone but it keeps telling me it's too big.

sorry left something out, 1/4 inch or so lip then 1/8 inch on each side of lip gives you the 1/2 inch that i am talking about.

Handcrafting Custom Turkey Calls / Playing surface to sound board question
« Last post by Jbowen on February 20, 2020, 05:06:02 PM »
Hey guys. Brand new here, been reading a lot and I’m about to order some material to turn my first calls. But I have a question. If my playing surface is 3.5” what size should my sound board be?  And what about other size playing surfaces 3.25”, 3” what size should those sound boards be?  Is there a general rule of thumb for the sound board size vs playing surface?  I was thinking I would start with glass over slate. Thanks for any input. And hopefully I’ll be able to show y’all some calls shortly!

What kinda tools are you fellows using to measure the thickness of bottom of your call, and thickness of the sides, if you have concave sides inside and out, how do you measure them to stay consiitent.

Here is what i use.  I use a forstner bit to drill a hole just larger than the smalle (Pinch?) jaws for the chuck and expand them inside the hole.  I then turn the outside of the pot.  After im satisfied with it, i switch to the large jaws that come with the below and turn the inside.  After turning the inside if i need to flip it over and touch up the back or when i sand it, i can grab the pot from the inside with the rubber mounts on the jaws.  I usually turn the outside of a few before switching the jaws over.
