Title: Help with pot call sound
Post by: Brad Devaney on February 06, 2020, 11:23:09 AM
Here are the dimensions to some pots i turned yesterday. I’m getting closer, but they still have a slightly hollow, and deeper sound than i like. One slate over glass and one the opposite. Any help on the dimensions to get better sound is welcome.
Cherry slate/glass
Pedestal height: 1/4”
Pedestal OD: 1”
Pedestal ID: 13/16”
Pedestal walls: 3/16”
Playing surface ledge: 1/8”
Distance from SB to Surface: 1/16”
Overall pot height: 3/4”
Pot depth: 1/2”
Bottom thickness: 1/4”
Pot walls: 5/16”
Sound holes: 6+middle hole- 5/16”

I was running an Ipe and Purple Heart. I got our a yellow heart and it helped some.

If you haven't already, start experimenting with the length and weight of the striker.  I say stick with the purple heart because its known as a good material on just about any surface.  Regardless off the wood species it will help to take out a variable by limiting your striker to one wood species (at least until you get the call where you want it).  If you still cant get them sounding right than go back to the pot call dimensions.  1//16" might be a little close on the SB to playing surface too.  I think it will work with the right striker though.

Looking at the measurements I wouldn't think you would get a hollow sound
The gap between the sound board and service is close maybe if you open it up a little
Get a better roll over probley will do it
