Title: Woodshop teacher seeking advice
Post by: Andrew Wessling on November 07, 2019, 11:08:53 AM
I'm a woodshop teacher in Nebraska and I have a number of students who are interested in making their own duck calls. The turning of the barrel seems to go off pretty well. However, as soon as we get to turning the insert, we have problems.

I have looked into purchasing an insert jig to keep things consistent with my students, and I have made a few jigs myself out of wood, but high school students are pretty fantastic at trimming those down with band saw. Does anyone have any suggestions on making custom jigs, ordering metal jigs, or happen to have an old insert jig sitting around collecting dust that they would be willing to part with?

I love to see how passionate these students are when it comes to making these, but I also am starting to walk that fine line where their frustrations lead to giving up on this project.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Andrew

Talk to Wade.  He is our jig expert.

For an Arkansas style call you need one of the heat treated public jigs to start.  A straight jig is more of a Masters course in call making.
Use our Tutorial section of the Forum as teaching material. Lots of instructional information there.
