Tutorial All wood deer grunt

(1/3) > >>

Bill:
This one is made from Marblewood
I cut 2 pieces one 3 3/4 and one 4 inches
3 3/4 will be the barrel and the 4 inch will be the call body

I mark the ends that were cut so when I put the call together the grain will come close to matching

I drill sand and finish the inside on both pieces first
On the Barrel I start with a 3/4 hole 1 inch deep then a 5/8 hole 2 1/2 inches deep and then finish with a 1/2 inch hole 1/4 inch

to sand the inside I fold sand paper over a pop sickle stick then finish and set off to the side and let dry

Now take the 4 inch piece and drill a 5/8 hole 3 inches deep then a 1/2 inch hole the rest of the way
Sand and finish the inside as before then set off to the side

Now I go back to the barrel and get ready to turn I use a pen mandrel and make my own wood stoppers for the ends turn sand and finish to your liking
Set off to the side and let dry

Now the call body
I always turn it round and mark 3/4 of an inch in from the end I marked when I cut the piece to length

Turn that end down to 3/4 of an inch I use an open end wrench to check the size of the tennon I use an 1/8 parting tool to make the oring groove

Turn sand and finish to your liking

Now lets set the reed
as a rule line the top end of the reed to the top of the tone board
I use the small oring to hold it in place while setting the insert in the call body Make sure the tone board is in the call body If your usin the adjustable tone board I set it so the last oring groove is about 1/16 above the wood
On this call I had to move the reed up about an 1/8 of an inch to get the nice deep grunt between that and cupping my hand a bit over the end of the call I got the sound I was looking for
When making this style of call the 2 things you need to be careful of Is make sure the reed is straight so it don't touch the inside of the barrel and the other is it don't take much air to make this call work

Finished product
