My circle cutting jig (with pictures)
« on: April 19, 2011, 01:05:44 AM »
Ok Braz, you spurred me into action.  I made a few modifications and built another circle jig.
You can modify this to cut a larger or smaller circle, I figured most of my pots would start at the same diameter so I didn't need to build an adjustable jig.

The parts:  I'm using a piece of maple ply, something flat and square.
A piece of wood for a stop block (the cedar piece).
A piece to fit the miter slot in your bandsaw table. (Mine was 5/8x3/8 and length of maple board)
Screws, pilot bit, countersink, drill, a square or two

Screw you stop block on one end from the top down.  Turn over and add the mitre rail to the bottom.  (Countersink these screws)

Set the mitre strip in the slot and cut the board until you end at the stop block.

Now mark a line perpendicular to the teeth of your blade.   (Off the saw)
I made mine 1 5/8.  This will be the center of your blank.   If you make 4" circles, you need your pin at 2".
Mark and drill a pilot hole through.

On the bottom of the jig I countersink the hole (so the screw head doesn't drag the saw table)
I used a screw cut off and sharpened for a pin.  It sticks through about 3/16 on the top.

Back to the saw,  I draw two lines intersecting at the pin to help me line up blanks.

I draw a line from corner to corner on a 4" block to find center then line that up with the lines on the jig, then press it down onto the pin.  this is actually rotated into cutting position.

Cut straight into your block until you are against your stop block.  Then spin the blank on the pin.

Once I'm all the way around I STOP the saw and back the jig out.

Once your done you end up with a circle with a center mark in one side!

The maple ply was a scrap piece from work, pay no attention to the big 86-86 on it...I believe in recycling! :up1:
And I put this all together with my phone so I hope its pretty clear.  If there's any question just ask.

That's a great job. Good pictures, good description and very easy to follow.

You won't get money rich in this hobby.  The richness is in the culture, the craft, the friends you meet along the way, and being able to call in a wary game animal with a call that you made with your own hands.

Very nice thanks for the post
you can also make a adjustable table for your disk sander if you don't own a band saw yet it fits you miter gauge slot with and you can just use a square block of wood close to the size that you want your circle to be then just run it up into the sander and rotate block by hand till you have your wooden circle all turned round to size you want....
