coco/acrylic goose
« on: April 10, 2011, 03:06:05 PM »
Made this one last night.  Mexican cocobolo and orange acrylic, one of Ron's bands and a CA finish.  Used a Shell Creek gutsert, but polished it up to give it some "bling".  I usually like the darker Mexican cocobolo, which this is, but I think the orange-ish Nicaraguan stuff would've been a better color match.

This one is quite a bit shorter than the goose calls I've been making.  I made a prototype in this length from some scrap acrylic a while back and it ran great, so this is the first one that I've made and finished with a shorter barrel and even stubbier insert.  Going to try several different reed/gut combo's in it just for grins.  But I know it'll run with some SR1's with slight modifications.

Don't know if I love the color combo or hate it, but for some reason I really like using orange acrylic.

I like using gutserts in my goose calls and the aluminum ones are first class.  I've also used Wade's PVC gutserts, which are good too.  I made a couple of my own from PVC electrical conduit and it worked fine.

Jason

not trying to jack the thread, how do you dip your calls in molten glass? Wouldn't the glass also add a few thousands of an inch to the inside diameter making your guts impossible to get back in? I really like the perfectly polished look...

Also, since it is dipped in glass, can that stuff chip or crack?

Nah, it isn't dipped in glass.  The guys are saying that to compliment my CA finish's smoothness.  Just plain old CA finishing!
