My first crow call, AZ desert ironwood
« on: March 16, 2011, 12:00:45 AM »
So you ask, why on earth would you turn your first turkey call from Arizona desert ironwood that costs a darn fortune?     Because I'm an impatient moron and turning one from cherry or maple just didn't sound like fun.  Fortunately it worked out and I didn't end up wasting a nice piece of wood.

Al was kind enough to include a handful of crow kits in the box of goodies he sent to the KC turn-fest and I managed to snag a couple of them.  I followed the Latta method in the tutorial for turning the morse taper off the guts and putting in o-rings.  Seems to have worked ok, but as is usually the case it is too late at night to be outside blowing game calls.  I buffed the ugly off the guts with the Beal buffer, which worked slick.  The finish on the wood is lots and lots of CA.  The shape pretty much came to me....I was wanting something fairly traditional, and I placed the lanyard groove so it matches the look of my goose calls.

Critiques and/or suggestions would definitely be appreciated.

Aaron

Looks a lot prettier than the sycamore one I made.   Should have the big boys sounding off!
I know I'm being to lazy to look it up, but what family of wood is desert ironwood in?
I'm having a bad googl day I geuss...looks like lots of trees have bee nicknamed ironwood at one time or another, including osage.

There's always one in the bunch, and I guess I'm the one. Great looking call, and a very nice turn on that wonderful piece of wood. However, the finish is wrong. On a crow call it should definately be a muted oil finish. Crows have terrific eyesight, and a beautiful shinny finish like that will scare them away. Muted is best for a crow call. Nice finish though.

Braz you're 100% right about the finish, but I'm not going to hunt crows.  I don't begrudge anyone doing it but it doesn't interest me one bit.  It'll be used as a locator for turkeys and nothing more.  High gloss probably isn't the best for turkeys either but by nature a locator call comes out when there's no turkey around, then it goes back in the pocket I keep it in.  If and when I start making these for customers they'll have the option of gloss or oil.

Jon the species name of Arizona desert ironwood is "olneya tesota".  It is hard as nails....Hardest wood I've ever turned.  It comes from the sonoran desert and they harvest it from dead trees lying on the ground for decades and decades.  From what I hear, the longer it is on the ground the better color it has.  This particular piece is pretty plain.  Price-wise, it makes African blackwood look like poplar!

Good news is that she sounds awesome!
