412 segments...
« on: February 28, 2011, 06:34:49 AM »
Paduk, lacewood, walnut, and cherry....412 segments, 24 segment rings....

Pretty scary spinning it up on the lathe the first time....

Oh, the hours spent cutting and glueing....  I originally cut up 1600 segments, so hopefully there will be more of this series coming out once I get done gluing up the rest... ::)
A good challenge is always worth the time spent, strive to take it up a notch every time.
I love it when a plan comes together.... :punk: :up1: :taz:

All The Best!
Doug

  That thing is amazing!!!  It looks like your turning both section together do you do that with all of your goose calls?

  There's got to be a name for this disease.

Well, one for your disease in making them, and one for my disease coming back to look at the photo over and over.

You guessed it.  I always turn my goose calls as one piece using one of Wade's MVS crush lock mandrels.
I drill and counterbore the blanks, glue in the gut-sert, assemble the blanks, put it on the mandrell with some sacrificial wood on both ends and crank the nut down tight.  Then turn away.
I go back afterwards with each half on a stubby mandrel and finish shaping the ends with sandpaper.
It works absolutely slick!

Here is the blank ready to go on the mandrel....

Now just for grins, a sneak peak at my next project, 772 pieces....

Awesome......just awesome
Of all the things I've lost while call making...its my mind I miss the most.
