Went on a hog hunt this weekend
« on: February 27, 2011, 11:27:44 PM »
Right in the back yard with a .22  :innocent:

Finally got this beast butchered. Scaled at 646 lbs. I did all the cuts boneless and put 380 lbs of pork in the freezer. The side and belly cuts were 4 in. thick so I had to slice them down into 2" thick slabs for the bacon. I got the bacon started curing in the fridge right now and it took every one of the shelves in the spare fridge to fit all 85 lbs. of bacon. The bacon smoking will take place on Fri. The meat has loads of flavor and has drawn many compliments already.  :2up:

I have neglected to tell most people who sampled the meat that this hog has consumed 500 lbs. of Asian Bighead and Silver carp (bones included), 450 lbs. of roadkill deer (bones included, he could crush them like toothpicks), about 70 goose carcasses (feathers and bones), all of the garden scraps from my parents 4 acre garden and 300 lbs. of Milo. Have I told you that pigs are omnivorous and can eat like pigs?  :smartass:

I have made a total cash outlay of $0.35 per pound

That is a bunch of pork!  I'd sure like to put something like that in my freezer!
