Arizona ironwood whistle
« on: January 29, 2011, 11:47:09 PM »
This is the 2nd whistle I've made, and the first one I've actually sanded and finished.  It is made from Arizona desert ironwood, which is my new favorite wood.  To me it looks like a cross-breed of cocobolo, bocote and osage orange (and there must be some gold mixed in there somewhere to justify the price).

Hardest part of making these is getting the holes tapered without chatter.  Adjusting the drill press speed to as fast as she'll go did the trick.  The finish is CA.  Sounds pretty darned good.  Mallard drake, widgeon, pintail, and teal are all in there.  Used cherry for the toneboard but I'll be putting wanut in once I get some walnut dowel.

KC, you are knocking out some very nice looking calls. Keep up the good work.

The last whistle I made like this I used a piece of sandpaper wrapped around a 5/16'' dowel to sand the wood down instead of drilling out for the tapered holes. Took a little elbow grease but I liked the end result better.

Im still having a problem getting the mallard drake sound from mine. I may need a little help from you, Mutt, or Bob. I know Bob has told me to ask him if I needed help but I wanted to figure it out on my own.

Great whistle KC!! I like to use clear or black acrylic 1/2" dowels polished after sanding the wedge.

It sure would be cool if someone put up some kind of a tutorial on how to make these whistles. I have no idea and would love to make a few just for fun.

Oooooo!    Ironwood, if I had a pile of that it would be my new favorite.  HEAVY!  how is it with cracking?  I keep wanting to try ebony but still afraid to spend the coin!

The ironwood turns fine.  Hard to find any that isn't riddled with cracks though.  It is always very old stuff....The older and deader the more colorful it is.  The bad news is that it really honestly smells awful.  My friend tried the whistle and said it smelled like "old man breath and coffee".  Pretty true...Smells like halitosis breath.  Definitely have to CA the inside of the call I've learned.
