Goose call v3.0
« on: January 26, 2011, 03:41:35 PM »
Not sure why, but I decided to make an acrylic goose call last night, as opposed to continue practicing with cheap woods like maple.  Seems like a pretty high risk for wasting a good piece of acrylic for a guy that has had limited success with goose calls thus far.  Guess I'm dumb that way.

It actually worked out well.  I put Shell Creek guts in it and it sounds pretty good to me.

The barrel is 2-7/8" including the band.  It is bored 7/8" to the tip of the guts, then 3/4", then 5/8" at the mouth.  The band is stainless steel that I polished, JB Welded in place.  The insert is about 2-1/8" not counting the gutsert (which I shined up a little).  It is bored 5/8" straight through and is flared out just past 3/4" wide at the exhaust end.

Not the best pics, note the drool on the toneboard.

Suggestions, critiques appreciated.

Now that I've made one from acrylic I have two nice pieces of Arizona desert ironwood that are itching to become a goose call.  Going to fight that urge for a while, just to be sure I know what I am doing.

Good looking!  One suggestion, you can save the gutserts for wood.  If you start with a little longer piece of acrylic you can turn you tenon on the acrylic.

I'm am by no means an expert call maker, but as for critique....The call looks great. I have just started selling calls and after twenty different proto-types I have learned from the goose hunting population that the biggest thing is how the call runs. Is it light and fast when you blow it? I finally got something that runs like a Zinc Money maker which seems to be what most of the guides out here compare calls to. So.....if you know what Im talking about then that's my critique. Freaking awesome looking call.
