new way to make deer grunt calls
« on: January 15, 2011, 08:44:54 PM »
I have been trying to figure out a way to make deer grunt calls without having to use an "o" ring and tennon fit.  Today I spent about 4 hours in the garage and I finally came up with something that worked out great and cheap at the same time.  I know you can buy the gutsert but you still have the "o" ring situation.  My new method completly ellimates the o ring and the cracking problem people talk about.  It may take a little longer to make one but I think this is the way I am going to start making all my grunt calls.  I don't really like making grunt calls but from time to time someone will request one.  I will kind of talk you through my way of making it along with the pictures.  The call is sanded however the finish has not yet been applied to the call.

First picture appears to be a regular ol' deer grunt call.

Second picture is where the fun starts.  I bough some threaded 1/2" PVC male adapters.  These work great however they have the nut end so you have to turn the nut shape round to fit 3/4" hole.  Next I only drilled my blank the distance of the 3/4" tennon which was approxamitly 3/4" inch.  I finished drilling the rest of the way through with a 1/2"  bit.  The deer grunt guts fit perfectly into the PVC adapter without any modifications.  Grunt tube goes on the same as any other grunt call.

Thrid picture shows the barrel part of the call.  This one uses the female adapter that accepts the threaded male adapter.  Again it had the nut shape end so you have to turn it round.  This fitting I turned down to 1" diameter hole.  Again I only drilled the distance I needed for the adapter to fit flush in the blank.  Next I stepped down to a 5/8" drill bit and drilled the rest of the way through.

If anyone has an intrest in this new method let me know and the next time I make one I will try and make a full tutorial.

I have never seen a deer grunt made this way so if someone else makes one like this I appologize and I am not trying to steal someone elses work.

This call looks pretty rough but I  was in the process of making a new style so was not to concerned about looks just looking for functionality.

Another way to skin a cat! Looks slick. I think the pics you posted are tutorial enough. I can see how it was done. Dont know that I will change my method but it may help another call maker.

Great idea. Very resourceful. I have something worked out for a PVC goose call that I will post up here somewhere later too.

That is pretty much genious.  I've seen the Shell Creek bolt style for goose calls but this is even better!  It has me wondering if a guy could do something like this on a goose call using PVC.  Great idea for sure.

You sure can, I'm working on the photos still. With a couple bucks you can make either a friction or threaded insert for a duck or goose call, no matter what your barrel and insert materials are. Goose guts will fit right into the PVC fittings with no problem. I am hoping to finish my first goose call next week using this method as soon as I can get back in the shop. I have been fighting with my inserts cracking on me, so I am hoping this will be the answer. I also have an all PVC goose call that I made for about $4.25 plus the guts. It works good, sounds decent and takes about ten minutes to assemble.

That is really slick. I have been thinking about trying grunt calls but have not been realcrazy about the whole o-ring idea but after seeing this I just may give it a try. Thanks so much for posting.

If anyone wants to give this a try I would like to make one sugestion.  When you get ready to glue the PVC into the calls screw them together and draw a line across both peices.  Then unscrew them and glue them in so that the lines match back up this way you get the two blanks to line up after they are screwed together.  I also cut a few of the threads off the front because it left about a 1/8" gab between the two after you tightened them up not they fit together flush.  If anyone has any questions feel free to ask away.

I went to the hardware store for furnace filters today and grabbed a few PVC fittings just for grins.  I was bummed that the 1/2" fittings I got had an inside diameter of 17/32".  Going to do some checking at other stores to see what I can come up with.

Check this one out in the goose call section: http://thogamecallsforums.com/index.php/topic,8701.0.html

And I do have a solution for the ID of the fittings, but I will have to post that later on.
