claro walnut crotch
« on: January 09, 2011, 11:42:45 PM »
This call was turned a year or two ago and it went oblong on me right after I turned it....Wood wasn't dry enough.  It is a nice piece of wood and for some reason I didn't throw it out.  I had an idea, made a jig and managed to re-turn it and get it back in shape.  I put four coats of tru-oil on it and buffed the shine off it with 0000 steel wool, then paste waxed it for a bit of a satin look.  I used a ceramic surface over a glass soundboard in it, as I already have a really spectacular claro walnut slate call.  This one is for me, as pieces of wood this nice are few and far between.  :devil2:

Thanks Jeff.  Your call is turned but I've still got to get some finish on it and turn and finish the striker.  Should be done by the end of the week.

Awesome looking calls as always. I noticed you seem to be using Tru Oil more. I just refinished a gun stock with it and it worked great and looked great and thought of using it to finish calls.

Are you applying it on the lathe and "burnishing" the finish to dry or are you finishing off the lathe?

Tru-oil is a polymerizing finish and therefore doesn't really lend itself to being applied under friction on the lathe.  I wouldn't suggest doing that.  I sand my calls to at least 600 and then apply it by hand with a piece of cotton t-shirt, rubbing in all directions to work it into the grain.  Let that dry at least 2 or 3 hours, then buff with 0000 steel wool and re-apply.  I'm usually using at least 3 coats.
