Latta or Taper on Crow Calls
« on: January 04, 2011, 10:40:35 PM »
I made a crow call using the latta method. Myself im not comfortable with it. With practice I think I can do it better. Also if i use the Mt2 taper how do i seat the guts. Is it glued with a adhesive or what? And finally will I need the Mt2 rough or finish reamer.  Thanks

Why are you not comfortable with it?

You could smooth it down really easily if you spent your money on a carbide cutter rather than a MT2 reamer.

Reaming out from 5/8" is a PAIN.  NOT worth doing.

I drill 43/64" and ream from there.  You're still loose on the top end, so I use small strips of athletic tape and Plumber's GOOP to fill the gap.  You can NOT remove these guts to make any changes this way.

I had Flint Hills make me a 43/64" mandrel for my way of doing this.

Just how I like doing it.  I wouldn't expect anyone else to like it.  Look at all of the money I have spent setting it up!  The mandrel, reamer and drill bit.

If I would have known how nice carbide tools would cut before I jumped into my other ideas, I would have just bought a square cutter, and would be using the Latta method.

I'll say again just for the sake of this wonderful discussion that I always get worked up about.......I HATE seeing crow call guts being JAMMED into a 5/8" hole and then sticking out the top!  Not only do they look bad, the guts are not able to perform to their highest capability.

I tried the latta method because I didnt have a clue about how to taper the hole. I have a carbide round and square. do you start tapering with the bite down inside the call or is there another way.

Also about not being comfortable with it. Well it was moving with pressure. I even put light pressure while turning. I was just afraid that I was going to mess it up with it moving so much. I think I would rather do the taper so that it fits right in the hole with no o-rings.

Thanks Shane
