On laminates and I guess others

On the ends where the inserts go(guess cab say the cut end) sanding to 600 and even a 1000 but it look messed up kind of "not clean" maybe the wood fiber or something. Any tricks to making it look better?

What kind of wood>?? Sounds like it is a soft wood and the fiber is turning over and gives that fuzzy look and not smooth.

An easy way to clean it up is to make a wooden mandral say 1/2" diameter, wrap it with some masking tape till it fits your barrel, and then put the barrel on it and sand the end in your drill press with a rubber art gum eraser.   A very very small drop of CA will fill the grain and should clean it up.   

Page 6 of this tutorial shows the process, even though it is done with an acrylic call, the idea is to show you the mandral set up and how to sand the end.   It works with wood the same way.  Just make sure your drill press is set to a slow speed.
