Antler Question
« on: July 18, 2008, 02:27:17 AM »
HaMeR, I just drilled and glued tubes into a couple of sections of deer antler what should i finish them with when i get them turned round? With my starter kit i got enough to make 5 each of pens and pencils. Well i like rosewood but they had to send a 7mm drill with the mandrel so i`ll be ponding 7mm holes through anything i can make into a pen. Finished up a red Dymondwood pen tonight for my aunts birthday tomorrow. Any recommendations on where to order kits from?  www.woodnwhimsies.com ever order from there? I was looking at the slim lines. I found it after e-mailing them from e-bay

Woodnwhimsies.com is a PSI reseller.  Their prices are better and the service is better, I have never had a problem with them.

Hi Rich. I've never turned antler so I can't help you there. I use PSI for my stuff but I'll have to look into the site you listed. Looks like you did real good on that antler too.  ;D ;D

That pen looks really nice!

I get most of my pen kits from:
www.woodturningz.com
www.woodturnerscatalog.com

Always had good service with them

I've made quite a few antler pens...I usually use a CA finish then a few coats of friction polish(Mylands)...Hope this helps some...
Here's pic of a few of them

I spray my antler's while they are turning at a slow rate of speed on the lathe. I use a High gloss lacquer. It works really nice and it looks like glass when I am done. Plus, it is water resistant and stain proof. We will see how durable it is.
