claro walnut and Tobin's osage
« on: November 08, 2010, 12:01:06 AM »
Made this one today.  It has a claro walnut barrel and the band and insert are made from some of that awesome dark colored "prismatic" looking osage that I got from Tobin.   Just love that stuff!  The finish is a whole lot of CA.  I still need to put some velvit oil on the toneboard and the inside of the tone channel.  I think the next one will have a brass band.  Stay tuned for that.... :whistling:

And no, those aren't sanding marks on the insert.  The osage has some wierd cross-grain thing going on.

I like it! Did you undercut the wooden band? I can see the shadow...looks good!

Sweet! That osage sure is nice. I just finished a turkey call and a couple strikers out of Tobin's osage and they sure do have some cool swirls and colors in the grain.

Bet that duck call glows in the sunlight.

Nope, what you're seeing is walnut, not a gap.  I drilled out the square osage blank with a 1-1/8" forstner, then slipped it on a 1-1/8" tenon on the walnut blank that I drilled out with the 5/8" bit.  Then I re-mount the barrel in the drill press with the band down, and drill out the band.  I use a parting tool to create a lanyard groove, which results in a clean transition between the two woods.

That thing is just beautiful. Great combo of woods.
