Hi JCZ...nice pics..I'm new to colorwood and have no idea how to finish it..Making ornaments , not calls so no lathe..Did you just use wax? , What kind ? Sanded how ? .How many coats ?

I tried polyurethane but it just darkened it and it was glossy..I'm looking for a high gloss finish on my colorwood carvings.

Thanks , Randy

Randy, sorry I didnt see this sooner. I finished these calls with several coats of CA glue. I sanded and applied the CA on the lathe. Then buffed them with carnuba wax on the lathe.
I do not have any experience with it but Ive seen some calls that Two Creeks Calls finished with minwax antique oil. It looked like it had a nice glossy finish. Maybe he will chime in to verify if that is something you could wipe on. I would think you could wipe on a few coats of it and get the finish you are looking for.

I would suggest a spray on laquer or water based poly for ornaments.

The oils work great but for me, it is as much to do about buffing and polishing after the oil has cured that brings out the shine. Un buffed, you can get a shine but no where near when you can buff them out
