Texas Twisters
« on: October 10, 2010, 10:27:49 PM »
Some more of my Texas Twisters, these are being made for the Texas State Coyote Calling Contest that will be held at Archer City, TX in January.  This is the first year for this contest, I have known the organizer for several years.  He already has some big name sponsors, and was still glad to get me as a sponsor,  I am donating a couple of calls, which will be a little more fancy than these.  These are various imported hardwoods with 3 coats of my own hand rubbed finish.

Thanks for the comments.  Parker, I turn and then hand carve the grooves and sand them.

Do you have some kind of turning/locking device you put them on for the carving?  I'm guessing knowing you, you use hand tools for the carving, rather than a dremel?

I can really see how folks would like those a lot.

I have them locked on a mandrel.  Then I draw off the lines where I want the grooves.  Next I use a saw and cut a shallow saw kerf on the lines.  Then use a knife to carve out some of the wood.  Finally start filing and sanding the grooves, the sanding takes out the knife marks and smooths every thing out.
