cocobolo w/ CA finish
« on: October 12, 2010, 09:44:18 PM »
Made this single reed call last night from a nice piece of cocobolo.  It has a CA finish that is like glass.  About 15 coats of medium viscosity CA.  I've been doing a few lately without metal bands and would appreciate your honest opinion of the look.  I use an o-ring insert, so the shoulder splitting shouldn't be a problem.

Finish looks great!  As for the band, I am partial to having a metal band on the barrel.  I think it dresses up the overall look of the call.  I know it's not needed with a shouldered oring insert, but for me, it just looks better with that design of barrel.

You won't get money rich in this hobby.  The richness is in the culture, the craft, the friends you meet along the way, and being able to call in a wary game animal with a call that you made with your own hands.

David I build them late at night after the wife and kids go to bed.  Guess I'm a night owl.

Thanks for all the feedback on the band guys.  Just trying a little something different, not dead-set on it.  With some of my calls it has looked pretty good but I can't disagree with the need for a band on this one.  Definitely not changing the shape of my calls....I've had huge amounts of positive feedback from people that are using them and I think it differentiates them a little.

Crawdad, you come to KC in January and if you haven't nailed down how to get the CA finish by then, you'll definitely leave knowing how.  Promise.

Kermit.

Not saying change the entire profile.  I to like what you have going.

But on the calls you are going no band with.  Try knocking the harsh corners off so it does not look like its wanting a band.

Or  my favorite idea would be to slightly knock off the harsh corner but then back cut on  the ends a little  But just so that it looks like it has a 1/8" or less wood band pressed over it.  Give the wood band some definition.

I sure hope you can understand my thoughts here.  There scrambled inside so putting them to print is a chore to say the least.

Totally understand what you're saying Madarchery.  Good point about the corners!

(who the heck is Kermit???)

Ditto on the band, a piece of brass would really set that coco off.
