Carved Cedar / Cypress Crow Call
« on: September 21, 2010, 11:50:55 PM »
I'm leaving for Texas to do some dove hunting  with a group of inlaws this weekend, so thought I would make a call commemorating the trip as a prize for some friendly shooting competition.  The Eastern Red Cedar is from a memorable tree that stood on my wife's grandparent's family homestead and the Cypress is from window sash wood of the original old cabin on the place.  The cedar surprised me with a bit of curly chatoyance as can be seen in the third picture.  As I've been playing with crow calls lately, and wanted to try a carved call, it seemed the perfect occasion to give it a try.  Recently I've been working on getting a good sound from a smaller call and this call is in that style.  It is 4 inches in total length.

I returned to the classic shapes for this one.  - Arlan

OUTSTANDING work Arlan!  I am very impressed with your work around the lettering/numbering!  That is just great!

AWESOME shape, and EVEN WAY batter that you have your own toneboards!

Please, pull up a chair and stay a while.  Let us know more about yourself and your call making, and PLEASE share more pictures of your work as you see fit!

Thanks y'all for the warm welcome!  I really do appreciate the comments and observations.  Always feel free to critique my work, as that is important to me as I learn and improve.  I'm easing back into some call making and tend to do single calls "as the spirit moves..."

This will be my first hunting trip to Texas, so am really looking forward to it.  Always a little unconventional, I'm getting into hunting after I started making calls for hunting friends....    I'm seriously testing the old adage about......teaching an old dog new tricks!  - Arlan

Update!

The Dove hunting trip was great!  Learned a lot, fine company and even collected some mesquite!!!

We couldn't get all the liars to agree on any competition rules, so they decided to hold a drawing and insisted that I be included....  Ironically, I won the drawing and the call now is in my collection with special meaning!  I'm pleased! :2up:  - Arlan
