(Pic. Added) Burl Help
« on: September 12, 2010, 04:47:56 PM »
O.K. I cut up a small maple burl that has been cut from tree for around year now. It is about the size of a soccer ball. I cut into 1 1/2 squares and as long as it ended up. When cutting it I seen cracks in it.. What to do now is my question?
Seal up or soak? I'm going to try and get some pics later today of it..

this is a small side slice that will make knife scales the rest is cut and sealed all up with anchorseal..Stump I did do 3 blanks like you said also..Thanks yall
Look at the crow call it is what got me going..

Thanks , Jeff

Fill the cracks, voids etc with CA.  Wax the ends and let it dry

Cover all the sides with anchor seal.  Anchor seal will allow the wood to dry while it tries to prevent cracking.

On burls there is no real end grain, you need to seal the entire blank, preferably with something like Anchor Seal to slow down the drying process.  In the absence of Anchor Seal use latex paint.  I have heard that latex based finishes like polyurethane can be used, but I have no experience with using it.
