First try with purpleheart
« on: February 08, 2008, 12:25:00 AM »
Well what do ya all think?

Reed insert is mahogany. I read that it will turn more purple when exposed to sunlight. Any experience on this? I also did a call body out of bloodwood the other night and i`ll post a pic when i get the finish straightened out >:(. I usually do my work in black walnut or cherry but i just orderd some turning blanks and started playing with them.

Nice looking call Rich. Yep, purpleheart will turn more when expoxed to air and sunlight. It will get really pretty. I am not a big fan of turning it however. I just don't care for the texture of the wood. I do like the bell end of your call. I like flared bells.

I turn all my purpleheart calls then set them in the sunlight (at the shop window) for at least three days.  Sand with Micro to 12000 and you will be surprised....some of the purpleheart you get will turn great other pieces will not....not sure why, probablly the moisture content......the higher the better...just a personal thing...

Looks good!  You can take a little hand-held torch to it quickly also to get a deeper, darker purple.

Nice call Rich,
When I turn purpleheart, I will also take an old piece of denim and burnish it with that to get darker purple accents.

Well i straightened out the blood wood But the old camera died. Heres the line up i ordered material and ya already seen the purple heart. Well left to right is purple heart, Blood wood, and Honduras rosewood.

They arn`t finished yet. They might end up on the for sale post yet when they are done. I gotta get some boards cut this weekend. I had to go and order material. Now i feel like a junkie looking for the next fix. I`ve turned one body out of each of half my first order and i got my next order planned. I`ll post them with new pics if i sell them.

Good looking work. Yep, turning is addictive. But good for you to. Realives a lot of stress.
