My slow turn motor set up for rotating calls for finishing
« on: August 25, 2010, 08:22:23 PM »

Here's my set up for slow turning call barrels and inserts when applying a finish that needs rotated.  The motor is a slow turn rotisserie motor I bought off of ebay.  It is on the top left.  I wrapped some sand paper around the drive pulley to reduce some of the slippage of the drive cord.

The drive cord is actually O-ring cord stock.  You can buy it in a certain length, and then use some CA glue to fuse the ends together to get the size of loop that you want.  I turned some idler pulleys with an integral 5/8" diameter dowel that the barrels slide over.  On a call barrel, you can apply the finish to the outside, and half of the inside in one sitting, the turn the call around and apply the finish to the other end and inside in the next sitting.

For the inserts, a few of the dowels have holes in the ends.  I stick in a 1/4" dowel in that hole, and then slip the insert onto that smaller dowel.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Brian

Wow, that is just too cool and very inovative. Nice going. Question, what do the idler pulleys turn on?

Braz,

I used a track roller that I found in the McMaster Carr catelog.

I wouldn't recommend them though.  They aren't as free wheeling as what I wished for.  That's why I have to have sand paper on my drive pulley.  To get a grip to turn all of them bearings.

That is really, really cool Brian.  Necessity is certainly the mother of invention.

Dude that is kick butt... I rotate my calls also for curing and can do 3 at the most... if I build somthing like this it would help me crank out more calls with finish... off to the hardware store after work now... great idea and thanks for sharing this with us...

Brian, you need to set this up as a tutorial so it doesn't get lost.
