one made from padauk
« on: August 21, 2010, 09:10:35 PM »
Here's a duck call I just made from a piece of padauk I have had in the shop for a long time.  This one's going to my friend Vince who is a Hevi Shot pro staffer and also reps Quaker Boy game calls...He's been a huge supporter of mine since I got started in callmaking, and he uses one of my slates.  He's the kind of guy that you give a call to and he sings your praises to a hundred hunters.     Used a brass band with three pins, and left the brass unfinished so it'll tarnish.  I kind of like the look of a tarnished band.  Is that crazy?

The barrel on this call is stubby (accidentally), but it is growing on me.

I like it!! I turned out 2 barrels (1 olive and 1 burl) and put brass bands on them and I also want them to tarnish. I think they will look better.

How stubby is it? It doesnt look too short. I think the size and shape look great.

JCZ the barrel is 2-5/8" end to end.  That's about 3/16" - 1/4" shorter than most of my calls.  I sand and polish the bands so they shine because want a nice finished look until they develop a nice patina.  Plus, hiding the pins have become a game for me.  Can't find the pins on this one.  ::)

Kyle, first of all welcome to the site!  I haven't ever done a toneboard from padauk before this call, but it is dense stuff and tight grained, not unlike cocobolo.  It sounds good on this one so it won't be the last one I make.

I guess after looking at it again the pic with the toneboard beside the barrel does show the stubbyness but I still like it.
