My New Predator Call Jig
« on: June 03, 2010, 07:34:23 PM »
In the duck call section there has been some talk lately about having to have a store bought jig.  So I decided to see if I still had the touch t0 make my own.  To be sure that it was mine I decided to make a 1/2" toneboard instead of the standard 5/8".  My cost was about 3 cents for the jig, I used a scrap of maple and the bolt cost me either 3 cents or 2 cents depending on where I got this one.  Since I was not sure I used the higher cost figure.  The entire project from start to finish took about 3 hours.  Introducing my Screaming Little Devil.

To make it as difficult as I could I made a miniature instead of a full size call.  It is about 3.25" long.  With only one good eye and a cripple, if I can do it anybody can.

Now for the insides, 1/2" toneboard, I used a 1/8" thick piece of cork from the auto parts supply house that I had in my junk draw.

To be sure I really still had the touch I cranked out another quick call using a piece of birch dowel instead of turning a insert.  Not as pretty but still a good sounding predator call, and a little bit smaller to test the size factor.  At 2.25" I think it is just about as small as I can get with my own toneboard.

And the insides of the small call.

It won't take anything that drastic.

Thanks for the comments.  I have another one that I am worked on that is LA style.  I went to a local machine shop and got the run around about how much work it was etc. and so forth, so I thanked him for him time and went home and made my own.  Oil field work keeps them busy so they can pick and choose who and what they do work for.

It is all in the tuning, start out with a J frame insert and make adjustments until you have the sound you want. just like coming up with your own perfect duck call sound.
