acrylic and corian
« on: August 22, 2010, 11:51:03 PM »
Hadn't done any clear acrylic in a while so I did this one today.  The band is corian, as is the insert.  Yes, it is an ugly green pastel color.     This is definitely the smallest call I have made.  I think my calls tend to be on the large side so I'm trying to work on making them a little smaller, and this one feels good in the hand.  Sounds pretty good, for one of my duck calls at least.

I did another one just like it with clear acrylic and white granite-looking corian, but my scrollsaw blade broke while cutting and I dropped the jig and the insert to the floor and broke the insert in half.  I was 20 seconds from being done.  There was a lot of cursing... :censored:

I like it. That corian band is sweet. I somewhat agree about the color, but it still looks awesome. did you drill the hole for the band or turn it?

...did you drill the hole for the band or turn it?

I drilled a hole through a 1.5" square 1/2" thick piece of corian with a really good forstner bit, turned a tenon on the clear part for it to slide over, and CA glued it in place.  Then I turned the whole thing round, which makes it look like I made the band and then put it on, only with a more perfect fit and finish.  First time I've done one that way and it worked slick.  Going to do the same thing with wood on some upcoming calls I think.

You're not kidding about the cork notch Jake.  I sand on the cork until it fits snug, but nowhere near as tight as I would on a wood call.  I've broken a couple of those, and there's no fixing that!  Thanks for the compliments.

Thanks guys.  Admittedly, the green corian is growing on me.  Did the same call last night with white corian instead of green.

Thanks.  I'll put up pics tomorrow.  I got some heat markings in the barrel so I ended up frosting the clear acrylic with the media blaster.  Not real tickled with the look...Need to use coarse media instead of fine.  Plus it kind of gave the clear acrylic a bit of a dirty look.

Here you go!  The beadblasting makes the clear acrylic look a little dirty...Almost like it is covered in brown dust...for some reason.  Going to try blasting it with some coarser media eventually.  She sure does sound good though.
