cocobolo pot
« on: July 26, 2010, 03:12:27 PM »
Seems like I can't turn the cocobolo pots as fast as I can sell them.  Everybody wants cocobolo...Fourth one I finished this week.  Jeez.  This one has a pegan peg, and is slate over glass.  I've finally decided to get ahead of myself and start gluing tenons on them and roughing them out
on the lathe so they're at least somewhat ready to put back on and finish turning depending on what soundboard/surface combination the customer wants.  I buy 4/4 cocobolo so I glue a poplar waste block onto the bottom of the pot before turning so my chuck has a dovetailed block to grab, and that always takes an extra day.  No more!  I'm gonna be proactive and get a few done ahead of time.

Thanks guys.  I appreciate the compliments.

Madarchery, I can do that in the next day or so.  It works pretty good until I can invent a wood thickener.   ::)  I've got some poplar gluing to curly claro walnut blanks right now...They'll make good subjects.

Got it from the local lumberyard actually.  4/4 is probably too thin for trumpets.  I like the Mexican cocobolo better than the Nicaraguan stuff...The Mexican variety tends to be darker with more black streaks in it whereas the Nicaraguan (and other sources south of Mexico like Panama) stuff tends to be more orange-ish and have lighter colors.
