Cleaning/finishing up crow call guts.
« on: July 25, 2010, 03:29:00 PM »
Ive been noticing that the black finish on the crow call guts isn't a very eye friendly finish for a finished call. Doe's any one have a method they've found to clean up the appearance of the call guts?

Normally, I sand the outside of the guts to about 600 grit and then buff them gently at a low speed.   I've always done this because as you mentioned, turning a nice looking piece of wood or acrylic and then just stuffing a plastic reed set in them seems sort of counter productive.  You can make them look very nice just by sanding and buffing.

Thanks for the reply Al, I have previously hit the guts w/a coarse 220 and was scared away by the scuffs. Do you use 600 grit only? I am set up to buff for a follow though.-Thanks

I dress them up with some 0000 Steel wool, then buff them up a bit.  As Al said, it makes a world of difference in the appearance.
