First all wood grunt call
« on: June 26, 2008, 09:51:39 PM »

Well I've finally made a all wood grunt call out of a cherry blank I had. Sounds very good.
Showed it to my brother and he said. Quote; Jake I can't wait to field test this one and he was LOLOLOLO cause He never wants to give the ones he likes back......

Thanks for looking, Jeff

Very pretty. I'd like to know if it sounds different than the ones with the plastic bellow.

I like your style.   The call looks great and I bet the wood ones sound a lot better than the ones with the plastic tube.

Really NICE work

It is beautiful for sure and I agree, I like the sound of a wood one over the plastic myself. Now, if I could just find a way to make the wood squish down like the plastic...LOL

I have some Hickory given to me to turn a deer grunt from. It's from a newly aquired ranch and the owner is a good friend. I have been looking at every "all wood/old school"  grunt I can find for examples since I have never turned one.  Your call is very similar to what I had in mind! Thanks so much for posting up the picture. I would never atttempt to turn a grunt from "special wood" without the help from this site (and Al's tutorials of course).  I hope to have enough left over to turn a rolling pin for the Mrs.

Good looking grunt call.  The sound out of an all wood call is amazing, you will never hunt with a plastic tube version again after you hear a wood one.

Back before commercial reeds were readily available the only way to make a grunt call was to make your own reed and you had no choice but to use wood to make your exhaust barrel.  I did experiment with the some plastic tubing from the hardware store in the 80s or maybe earlier.  Then came out the reed assemblies and all I did was the plastic tubes until a couple of years ago.   Some where at home I have one of my old calls, when I return home if I remember I will post a photo of it.  That one is sort of modeled after a Herters or Gander Mountain deer call.
