Wind chimes?
« on: March 19, 2010, 01:31:32 PM »
  Anyone ever turned parts and cut parts for a custom wind chime?  I LOVE listening to some wind chimes, and I have been thinking about making my own custom set.  I've just got one chime here at the house, and it was given away by a casino, so it is pretty cheaply done, but is still hanging 10 years later.

What have you guys got in mind for ideas about rope/string type to use, and metal pipe types to use?

Are there kits out there where I can just provide the wood?

What other thoughts do you guys have on this?   :pot:

I have never seen a kit before. Should be pretty easy to do. Just make up a bunch of wooden tubes, with different lenghts, hole sizes, thicknesses of wood, etc. Then hang them. Should be fun. Let's see some pictures.

Electrical conduit pipe for the pipes and cheap chain from the hardware store along with a few eye hooks makes up the hardware.  Round wood disk for the top holder and another for banging on the pipes, this one is called a clapper.  On the bottom have another piece that catches the wind to keep the clapper clapping.  Most that I have see use 4 or 5 pieces of conduit all cut to different lengths, as each length will give a different tone.

Best to use some high dollar tuning equipment to get the best sounds possible, you will not want to listen to an out of tune wind chime.  Out of tune wind chimes are like listening to a rock concert and classical opera at the same time.  I believe there is a callmaker named Sly Dog that can help you with the proper tuning equipment.

:up1:  Braided Dacron is the string of choice I see on that site Al.  That is great information!

Cracked me up reading about them hitting specific notes and stuff.  I guess I'll have to make some wrong ones to learn how horrible they can sound when tuned up wrong.   :2up:

  I had no idea what I was getting myself into here.

For some reason, I just thought you made different sized tubes, and let it rip.  I suppose there's folks who think you can just sit a slate on a chunk of wood and make a turkey call too though.   :up1:

The best source for your tubes might be Onlinemetals.com   you can order lots of different diameters, wall thicknesses and materials, and you can get it in one foot lengths.   There are in Washington or Oregon so they should get it to you in just a few days.

Or, you could take a set of calipers, a tape measure, and a note pad and head off to the store and see what they have in stock.   Measure the heck out of what they have and go from there.

Parker I have been making some using Stained glass left over pieces for the chimes and turning the tops and strikers the glass has real nice sound to them and it doesn't need to be blowing real hard to get them singing also so made a few with copper tubing " water pipe " from lowes

I love that glass one!

If you like chimes you will love the sound of the glass chime they have a great sound
and like I said they don't need lots of air blowing to get them going sound is real relaxing
one word of caution if you do make one the key is diamond bits for little holes in the glass and slow speed drilling let the bit do all of the work or you will break the glass.
