given the density of the wood does the striker need to me a little heavier. I was thinking of making a duck call out of it, but I wanted to get a little input from someone who may have attempted it before.

I like dense woods for duck calls, so I wouldn't make a duck call out of it.

As for a striker, it kind of has a 'sponge' type grip to it on the calling surface.  I make my head, and my shaft just a little bit larger than normal, yes.

My strikers in general are pretty thin though, so it may be fairly normal sized for others.

I have turned many call's out of Sumac! if you look on my last post (Few New Calls) right above you're last post, the call second from the left is Sumac with maple tip's! the problem with Sumac it rot's from the inside out so you end up with a spot in the middle of you're wood that has very soft spot that is about imposable to make a tone board out of it by the time you drill you're 1/4" hole in it. Making the barrels is not a problem cause the rotten part is smaller than the 5/8" hole you drill in the barrel. I have tried wood hardeners with vacuum and many others trying to make the tone boards come out with the soft core! I would like to try to sleeve the tone board with a piece of 1/2" Delrin then drill the 1/4" hole!! this is neat wood to work with, Don't give up!!!
