more boxes
« on: June 22, 2008, 01:28:21 PM »
For those of you that dont know me, I really like to play around with woods most havent tried. One of my favorites is a canarywood box with walnut paddle. Well, I found a guy who gave me some new woods to try out. The first one has been done before that I have seen, but this piece had some extra bonus features, spalting AND worm holes. I did not fill the holes, figured it added character. The next is a magnolia box with a cherry paddle, and the last is a box made of juniper with a jatoba paddle.

You sure make nice looking calls. Is that a rubber stamps you use to get your logo on thecalls or something else?

It is a rubber stamp. Steve Mann suggested it. I am going to have a branding iron made shortly and think this will be even better

I like the branding iron idea. I have been looking at rubber stamps but not sure how they would work on a call.

Thanks

They tend to be difficult as the ink will sometimes run, or it takes forever to dry. I have found that the best way to make it work is to spray a coat of lacquer, then apply the stamp, then several more coats of lacquer. I figure the iron will cut my work time in half for that part

Sounds good to me. I have been trying to use a sharpie and so far everyone has run on me and some really bad. I have thrown away calls because of the big black ink smudge.  Right now I just don't sign them at all.

Use a pen that contains India Ink. It orks very well on wood and doesnt smear or run. After you sign the wood, then spray with lacquer a couple of coats

I use a stamp right now too. Have the same fun as everyone else too. The branding irons are bit out of the budget right now but soon, MAYBE...LOL
Nice calls misfire,, I like to try different woods as well. I recently tried some "Aptong" on cedar that came out sounding very nice. The Aptong is purty too. very hard and dense.

Here you go...
The box is yellow cedar and the lid is from Aptong.

I'll try and post some more with the dfferent tops on them.

I'm told it is from South America. I got it from a friend who has a mill but used this to put a floor in his truck bed. Smells almost like a spice mix when you cut or sand it.

Thats my kind of friend. I have a friend who builds some of the most amazing custom decks, primarily out of jatoba and tigerwood ( goncalo alves) and he gives me all of his cut-offs. He gave me a piece of ipe that turned out a very nice pot call. The tigerwood generally tends to be plain, but occasionally I get some with some great grain.
I just turned some inserts yesterday out of brown ebony, just had to wait for the lacquer to cure before I put the reed in it

Those are nice calls!   Great job on them.

The wood, on the one, I think it is called Apitong with an I.  It is used for flooring and, as you know, truck beds.  It comes from South East Asia, Burma, Thiland  - that area.  It is supposed to be very strong and resistant to bugs.

Just an FYI.
