Very nice call for your first acrylic turn!! The shine is awesome. 8) Acrylic sure does look nice when it is all polished up like glass. The thing that I found out when turning acrylic is that it will teach you all of the bad habits you have acquired when just turning wood. ;) The second thing I learned was that you need to keep the tools very sharp for acrylic.
I turn acrylic on medium speed, and you want to get ribbons of acrylic to spin off of the blank, rather than shrapnel. If the tool or blank chatters, it will cause shrapnel. A good mandrel and supports on both ends of the blank help reduce the vibrations and chattering of the blank which will result in shrapnel. It took me quite a long time and many peices of acrylic in the process to finally turn one without any shrapnel coming off the blank. And yep, that shrapnel stings really good. >:(
