Had to try just one ... I'm hooked
« on: June 01, 2008, 08:16:35 PM »
This is my first acrylic call that I have ever made, in the process of doing this I have learned a few new things.

#1  Got to get me a full face shield, this stuff stings when it hits you,
#2  Ya sure can't hog into it like ya can on wood, just take small cuts,
#3  Sand, sand, and more sanding  but the finish  WOW   you can see through it !!!
#4  I have to remember #1

Hope you all enjoy seeing this, I had a blast making it ......... got to remember #1

......... Alvin

WOW. Your first acrylic call and it looks that good. Looks like you have been at it for years. I like the way you took the picture to. I don't think I'll ever try that stuff. It's more fun watching what you come up with.  Congrats on such a great call.

Very nice call for your first acrylic turn!!  The shine is awesome. 8)  Acrylic sure does look nice when it is all polished up like glass.  The thing that I found out when turning acrylic is that it will teach you all of the bad habits you have acquired when just turning wood. ;)  The second thing I learned was that you need to keep the tools very sharp for acrylic.

I turn acrylic on medium speed, and you want to get ribbons of acrylic to spin off of the blank, rather than shrapnel.  If the tool or blank chatters, it will cause shrapnel.  A good mandrel and supports on both ends of the blank help reduce the vibrations and chattering of the blank which will result in shrapnel.  It took me quite a long time and many peices of acrylic in the process to finally turn one without any shrapnel coming off the blank.  And yep, that shrapnel stings really good. >:(
