two new calls
« on: November 25, 2009, 01:08:37 AM »
Last night I turned this barrel from clear acrylic.  The band is aluminum...The picture doesn't show it but it is polished like a mirror (so it'll shine in the sun and flare ducks).  This is my first totally clear barrel....Came out fairly scratch-free on the inside...There's one tiny scratch that I didn't see in the shop that showed itself later but it isn't very noticeable.  I like this clear stuff!  The insert is an Echo for now but I'm going to turn a clear acrylic insert of my own in the next couple days.

This one is from solid surface countertop material I got from cterese12.  The barrel is an avocado green but the color doesn't show too well in this pic.  The insert is blue.  Polished aluminum band.  Sounds great.  Odd color combo but I kind of like the look!

Good looking calls. I got a box of the solid sticks from him also just not enough time to turn one out yet. I can hear those things calling me I cant wait to see how they turn. Does the band saw cut them ok?

JCZ, I can't say for sure if the bandsaw cuts them ok...I've been using the sliding miter sled on my tablesaw, which is how I cut most of my blanks.  My bandsaw is a honkin' big monster so I don't use it unless I need it.  If you treat the stuff just like you'd treat acrylic I think you'll be fine though.  It turns pretty much the same as acrylic.  I've also found that wet sanding to at least 1200 grit before polishing is necessary to make sure you don't see fine sanding lines.  I've been sanding to 2000 for good measure, then polishing.

Thanks for trying to help. I have a dumb question though!! How did you cut the toneboard on the insert? Also I just got some sandpaper up to 2000 grit today just for this stuff(and acrylic)

How's that a dumb question?  (it isn't)  RiverMallard taught me a nifty trick....Spiral blades on the scrollsaw work so well you really don't even need to file or sand the toneboard.  Before that (on my wood calls) I was using a coping saw and filing to my jig's profile.

One note of caution!!!!!  Be really careful when you put the cork in.  The stuff is not flexible and it will break if you try to force an oversized cork in your notch.  I broke one that way.  Now I sand my cork on some 150 grit a little before putting them in.  That'll depend on your jig and your cork thickness and such though.

I gave the countertop material call to a good friend tonight.  He said that the color combination looked like avocado dip and those blue corn tortilla chips.

Band saw works great on it. I cut a piece of it last night to see how it would do. Thanks for the tip on the cork also. I know I have made some of my calls so that the cork is so tight I have to use a screwdriver to push it in. I know I dont need the cork that tight it is just how it turned out and I didnt want to sand the insert any.(didnt want to mess the sound of the call up)
Im going to go get a spiral blade now also!!
