Old school hooter

This was a fun little call to make, it is antique American chestnut, with a walnut mouthpiece, I used my little torch on the ends and around the hole for a little character, after I torched one end, it looked like a head on view of a turkey, there was a  knot that looked like the body even has a beard, and the grain looked like tail feathers, pretty cool! OH YEAH!  I've seen very few of these made custom!  I have not had a chance to make my own yet, but I sure am looking forward to it!

Why the long mouth piece?  Something there I don't know about?

I've always been confused about how you mount the mouth piece.  I've never actually held a custom one.

Parker, The mouth piece is longer than usual for a couple of reasons. I tapered it from each end with some restriction in the middle, thinking it should increase the velocity of the air crossing the hole of the resonant cavity, increasing the fundamental amplitude (acoustic intensity) of the instrument, also effectively reducing the amount of air required to operate it. Other factors of course are the bore diameter, length, and size of the hole, all of which dictate the tone and volume of the call.

:up1:  Blackfalcon, you are really firing me up about this!  I've gone back and found all of my old notes from 2003 about making one of these.  I guess since I've got the tools now to do it, and the know-how on how to use the tools from Marvin, its probably time to get it done!

I used to be a creative little cuss I guess.     My old notes are a LOT more intricate than what I keep now.

Well,, let's see what you come up with!! I don't know that they will be a money maker, but they are kind of fun to make for a change of pace, just don't burn out your lathe drilling them out!!
I've got some to post if it ever stop's raining here,,,of course, now I will have to make matching crow calls, lol

I've got a full-size lathe to do the drilling on if I need to.  That's probably a good idea to just head there to begin with.

I'm in it for the harvests anyways.  As long as I can come out even, I'll be happy.  There's a lot of local guys here that run Poor Valley's turkey calls.  If I can get them to carry a crow call or owl call of mine, we can one-two punch them thunder chickens all spring!

OK, time for me to jump in with a question. Parker, you say you want to drill a hole 1 1/2" in diameter. Does it really have to be that large? Could it be, say 1" or 1 1/4" instead? Where did you come up with the magic number of 1 1/2" diameter for the bore?  Also, why 4" long? Why not 3 or 3 1/2"? I have never even seen one of these before this post and so just asking questions.
