This is how I make a deer call
« on: May 30, 2008, 10:17:20 PM »
This is the first tutorial I have done
After choosing the wood that I am going to use I cut 1 blank 3 inches long and the other one 3 inches long.I find the center and mark it with a punch.

I then take the longer blank and drill a 7/8 hole 1 deep with a forstner bit.The center is now marked for the next step.I change to a 5/8 forstner bit and since it will only reach 2 inches I drill of an inch deep then change to a 5/8 drill bit and drill 1 1/8 deep, and now I change to a inch bit and drill the rest of the way

I drill the shorter blank with a hole all the way through

I turn the longer blank to my desired shape sand and finish and set off to the side

Now lets turn for the reed

I make the blank round and measure in 1 inch from each end and mark with a pencile all the way around

I turn each end to make a 7/8 tennon 1 inch long .I use an open end wrench to keep checking for size

I use a caliper to check the size of what is in the center to match it with the barrel taper the ends of each tennon and put the O-ring grooves in

I use the plastic tube for a guide on where to put the O-ring  for the tube

I put in the O-ring grooves sand and finish,Set the reed and put the tube in place

Here are a couple pics of the finished call

A very comfortable mouth piece

That won't work Bill. That's just the path to where it is on your computer.

Bill you're going to have to put it on the internet somewhere so we can look at it. You could upload it to your website then provide us a link.

As long as you have the file saved you can upload it to the internet. I see you have a website. You can upload it there or like Bill said start an account at photobucket and upload it to that site then just post us a link.

Great looking work Bill.  Very similar to how I make my goose call barrels.

Great job on the call and on the tutorial Bill!  I understand how to make a deer grunt now.  The tutorial was very easy to follow.

You won't get money rich in this hobby.  The richness is in the culture, the craft, the friends you meet along the way, and being able to call in a wary game animal with a call that you made with your own hands.
